SMART - an umbrella organization promoted with the active involvement of the Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI), supporting the various clusters in India making traditional footwear, leather goods and other rural products with a focus on marketing of their products participated in the MICAM The ShoEvent from 2nd to 5th March, 2010 at Milan, Italy.

Simultaneously, MIPEL International Leather Goods Show was also held at the same location. The large number of exhibitors from all around the world participated in the premier international fairs. The exhibits included Autumn/Winter collections of latest fashion and technology.

The leather goods fair emphasis was on creative flair and technical skills of artisans and manufacturers. The exhibits included both leather and non-leather materials.

According to Mr. Rajeev Lakhara, IRS, President, SMART, “The fair was a perfect platform to know the latest international trends besides enabling the buyers to view the most
comprehensive range of products of the artisans/ micro-entrepreneurs which being handcrafted, were different in design and superior in get-up.”

The stall of SMART, during the MICAM The ShoEvent was at FIERAMILANO New Fair grounds at RHO at Pav. 7 stand M21.

MICAM The ShoEvent was attended by 1,611 exhibiting companies, 572 of them foreign, who presented their new collections covering a net surface area of 72,474 square metres.

The products displayed at the stall of SMART were an amalgamation of traditional and contemporary styles which included Mojari (handcrafted jooties), sandals and chappals. The collection was very well appreciated by the buyers and was able to evoke interest among the buyers.

There were some buyers from Tiwan & China as well who stated that there is a demand of Indian leather in their country. The people in these countries want to have a product which is of Indian leather. It was indeed a great fair. Some of the flat lasted footwear exhibits were manufactured without insole. Some of the footwears were with synthetic upper with polymer embossed designs whereas some exhibits of footwear were with left & right of different colour.

On behalf of SMART, Mr. V.B. Parvatikar, Director (Technical) & Mr. Bhuvnesh Bansal, Designer, Product Development Center both from FDDI attended the fair and were present at the stall.

During the fair, brochure and magazine of FDDI were also distributed and information about FDDI's laboratory services, training programmes and consultancy services were provided through brochure and one-to-one meeting.

SMART received enquiries for the possibilities of variations in the samples displayed and the potential scope for the export of Mojari is to Oman & Saudi Arabia.
