As per estimates around 2,500 jobs have been lost in the shearing shed across Australia due to the dwindling numbers of sheep flock. The size of the Australian sheep flock has fallen from a 170 million in 1990 to below 77 million in 2008.
The wool-classing system run by the Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX) has seen a drop of around 2,500 in registrations in 2010. Against the previous batch strength of 22,000, they have been able to register only 19,500 for the 2010-12 batches.
However, Mark Graves, CEO of AWAX said that the fall was expected and added by saying that were enough professionals to ensure consistent wool quality for global buyers and that it was encouraging considering the fall in wool output.
He observed that despite the numerous difficulties like droughts and dwindling of flock numbers in the previous three years, AWEX was fairly comfortable with the number.
