The Cotton Farmers Branch of China Cotton Association and Xinjiang Branch of Huatai Cotton Cooperatives jointly conducted a survey on the intention of cotton planting area among 2,057 cotton farmers from 12 mainland provinces and Xinjiang province in February-March, 2010.
The result shows that national cotton area in 2010 will increase 0.09 percent over the previous year and is expected to reach 77.85 million Mu (one hectare=15 Chinese Mu).
Judging from the situation of the three major cotton producing regions, cotton growing intention in the Yangtze River region will be restored to some extent, in Yellow River Basin it is forecast to fall, while in Northwest it may remain flat or slightly increase.
As China's textile industry maintained good growth momentum in the first two months of this year, cotton demand will further increase, conflict between supply and demand will arise.
The textile industry has proposed the government to introduce new cotton policies as soon as possible, so as to improve the enthusiasm of farmers to grow more cotton and steadily increase cotton area.
