Aussies side-tracked by Kiwi wool firm

Australian Merino producers get side-tracked yet again; this time, by New Zealand, as US giant wool sock dealer, SamrtWool, signed a contract with New Zealand Merino Company (NZM) to increase its orders and exclusively source Merino wool from it.

This partnership is likely to support SmartWool meet its double-digit growth targeted each year for the coming three years. In his statement, Chief Executive, NZM, John Brakenridge said that, “About twenty percent of the Merino and mid-micron clip, ranging between 18 and 26 micron will be included in this single contract.”

During this week, SmartWool is likely to shell out details about the volume and price projection for wool requirements. Since 2001, their contract has delivered more than NZ $100 million in business to New Zealand wool cultivators.

This week a new education project for wool, in the interiors textiles sector was introduced by the International Wool Textile Organisation. This project will be carried out in Christchurch, New Zealand, in April this year.

It is likely that representatives from eleven of the world's leading architects from Europe, Japan and United States will be present. This five-day event aims at advocating the benefits of using wool over synthetic in both domestic and commercial buildings.
