Braskem wins top environmental award

Braskem won the Top Environmental award offered by ADVB-SP (São Paulo Association of Sales and Marketing Directors), as one of the top ten companies with the best practices related to the environment and sustainability in 2009.
During the event held in São Paulo, Jorge Soto, director of Sustainable Development at Braskem, presented Braskem's strategy and projects for social-environmental development. He underscored Braskem's commitment to responsible actions that are reflected in the continuous improvement of its ecoefficiency indexes.
The research and development programs for innovations in sustainability were also underscored, as was the support for the social-environmental projects developed in São Paulo, Bahia, Alagoas and Rio Grande do Sul, states where Braskem has industrial plants.
The Lagoa Viva Project is one of the highlights. It encompasses 22 municipalities in Alagoas and tries to bring change to education and attitude for youths, children and teachers in relation to environmental issues. In relation to cultural promotion, it is worth pointing out Fronteiras do Pensamento, which is held in Porto Alegre and aims at bringing modern thinkers closer to the public through debates and lecture cycles the stimulate new perspectives.
Braskem's social-environmental action can also be identified in each of the company's strategic moves. In 2009, a partnership was signed with Novozymes of Denmark (world leader in industrial enzymes) for the research and development of polypropylene (PP) made from sugar cane. Braskem was the pioneer in this sort of initiative and the first company in the world to certify polyethylene and polypropylene from a 100% renewable source.
Soto affirms the recognition is gratifying for all those involved in the continuous improvements promoted by Braskem, and adds: "This award is a sign of our commitment to sustainable development. It is also an incentive for us to always continue in search of the best alternative to make our action increasingly more positive for society and for the environment."
The Top Environmental award was created in 1993 by ADVB-SP to identify and valorize the main companies that are concerned about the environment. The initiative aims at making environmental responsibility more accessible and to promote debates that make actions in this area more common in the business sector.
The 2009 edition of the award was held in a different format from previous years. Personalities from the sustainability and environmental responsibility sector were responsible for indicating the competing companies. Rather than a single case, indicated companies were recognized for their diversified actions in several fronts that comprise the sustainability area.
