Absence of skills in textile sector worrisome – expert

An expert in skill development bemoaned the fact that, the Indian textile sector lacked the skills, necessary to take advantage of the prospects thrown up by the global textile industry, particularly in the field of technical textiles and attributed the same to absence of fragmentation and vertical integration the most.

This was noted by G. Somasundaram, Head, Industry Linkages (Skill Development), Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Cluster (IL&FS), while addressing a workshop on Fashion Business- Emerging Opportunities in Indian Garment Sector, held in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

He said that, in the next ten years, there will be a requirement of more than three million people by the textile value-chain, so there is an urgent need for develop a synergy between industry and educational institutions to come together and offer skill development courses.

C Balasubramanian, Manager, Juki India, the Japanese industrial sewing machines major, with a 60 percent share in the market said that, fashion had become a big business and a multi-billion-dollar industry, with major contributions to national economies of India, China etc.

The workshop was co-organised hosted by Department of Home Science and Fashion Designing, Fatima College, Madurai; Tamil Nadu Readymade Garment Manufacturers Association and Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association.
