Handicrafts exports to grow by 10% - EPCH Chairman

Denmark purchased goods worth Rs. 143 crores in 2009-10 against the Rs. 135 crores in previous year. Other important buying countries in European Union have been Sweden, Greece, Finland, Cheque Republic, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Cyprus, Austria, Bulgaria, Ireland, Luxemburg, Malta, Romania, Slovenia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Latvia etc. Total exports to European Union were Rs. 3515.81 crores.

As per Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director-EPCH, the next important market for India during the years 2009-10 was USA taking a share of 29% of India's total exports. USA being the single largest market in terms of countries has shown increasing interest in buying from India in nearly all the products groups. The total exports to USA during 2009-10 were Rs. 2489 crores in 2009-10. Out of this total figure, exports of Embroidered and Crocheted goods was largest amounting to Rs. 939.42 crores in 2009-10 as against Rs. 846 crores in the previous year. The second largest exports was of artmetalwares amounting to Rs. 566 crores as against Rs. 523 crores last year. Hand printed textiles and scarves were next in terms of value and volume amounting to Rs. 330.07 crores as against Rs. 304.74 crores in the previous year. Woodwares exports amounted to Rs. 196 crores as against Rs. 166 crores in the earlier year. Imitation Jewellery was also an important category exporting Rs. 80 crores worth goods in 2009-10 against the Rs. 66 crores in the previous year, Zari and zari goods exports were Rs. 50 crores as against Rs. 46 crores in the previous year, Shawls as artwares were Rs. 15 crores as against Rs. 13 crores in the earlier year.

Miscellaneous handicrafts also showed an increase from Rs. 290 crores in the last year to Rs. 312 crores in 2009-10.

Mr. Rakesh Kumar further added that Latin American region has also shown considerable interest in Indian handicrafts products. Though the share is not very substantial, yet keeping in mind the fact that there are logistic problems in exports to Latin American region, the exports have shown an increasing trend during 2009-10 as compared to the exports in the previous years. The exports to entire Latin American region during 2009-10 amounted to Rs. 144.56 crores as against the Rs. 132.53 crores in 2008-09. The share of Latin American Region in India's total exports has been 1.66% during 2009-10.

The share of other countries viz. Middle East, South East, Far East, Africa and CIS countries has been around 30% of India's total exports.

Individual's figures for each of these regions are yet to be made available. However, it can generally be said that the increase has been all around in varying percentage in respect of all the regions. Generally, Indian handicrafts exports have done much better as compared to previous years and is expected that the exports during the current year viz. 2010-11 will grow by about 10% over the previous year, said Mr. Kumar.
