Bt cotton seeds in the state of Andhra Pradesh would not see price hike in the next season, as per the decision taken by the state government. So, the varieties of cotton will be sold at the prices same as that of previous year, i.e.

Bt 1 (single gene) variety will be sold at Rs 650 per packet of 450 gm and Bt 2 (double gene technology) for Rs 750. The government will soon issue its order regarding this decision.

In the month of February, The National Seed Association of India (NSAI) had asked for 30 percent increase in Bt cotton seed prices. It informed the state government that the retaining the same prices as those prevailing in previous years of Bt-cotton seed varieties would financially hit the seed companies and could force them to cut back production.

In the year 2006, Bt 1 variety of seed was priced at Rs 750 a packet while Bt 2 was at Rs 925, while, in the year 2008, it was reduced to Rs 650 and Rs 750 a packet, respectively. With the 35 percent increase in input and labour costs, the seed association had demanded the government to increase the price of Bt 1 variety to Rs 850 and Bt 2 to Rs 1,050.

The seed companies spend Rs 140 on distribution of seeds, Rs 243 on production, Rs 81 on research and pay Rs 96 as trait fee to the company that owns the rights to the technology of Bt 1 seeds.
