Adidas opening is great news for Spartanburg - Gov. Sanford

Gov. Mark Sanford joined state and local leaders and officials from Adidas at the grand opening of the global sportswear company's distribution and customer service center in Spartanburg. The 1.9 million-square-foot distribution center, the company's largest nationwide, was first announced in late 2007 as employing 1,200 workers and a $150 million capital investment.

“This grand opening isn't just great news for the Upstate's economy - it's also further evidence that our state is reaping real dividends on the economic development front,” Gov. Sanford said. “The Spartanburg operation is the end result of a consolidation effort involving seven centers in three different states. The fact that Adidas chose South Carolina speaks volumes about our competitiveness as a state, and I'd simply say thank you to the leadership at Adidas for placing that level of confidence in our workforce.

“On that point it's worth remembering that this Grand Opening comes on the heels of an amazingly successful week of jobs and investment announcements last week by our Commerce Department - totaling $1.2 billion in capital investment coming to South Carolina and 1,400 new jobs for South Carolinians. That's a new job every one minute and 42 seconds of last work week. In fact, last year our state led the entire Southeast in job recruitment, and in just the last several months we've made five 1,000-plus job announcements.

Boeing's decision to land in North Charleston last fall marked the largest economic development announcement in state history. We've made strides in rural economic development, including six project announcements in Hampton, Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell Counties totaling 1,139 new jobs. We've expanded our state's QuickJobs training program, led the nation by certifying over 100,000 South Carolinians for Career Readiness, and graduated 94 percent of our Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG-SC) students, easily besting the national standard.”

Adidas' new complex includes a 1.1-million-square-foot facility for footwear and an 800,000-square-foot building for apparel, and will house jobs in customer service, credit, distribution and accounting.
