Fifty handicraft villages in five years

A regional seminar on handicrafts was recently conducted in the Governorate of Manouba during the ongoing regional meeting of craftsmen in Greater Tunis, which is being organized from May 18 to 22 in the governorate.

The seminar titled 'Handicrafts villages, initiative, creativity and a vehicle of regional development' was chaired by Ridha Ben Mosbah, Minister of Trade and Handicrafts.

Quality in handicraft, role of cities in the development of handicrafts and the marketing of handicrafts were the issues of focus in the seminar.

While speaking during the event, Mosbah highlighted the imperative role of handicrafts in the country's economic development, its contribution in strengthening the cultural identity, heritage preservation and enhancing Tunisia's national history.

Developing handicraft sector of the country is essential, stressed Mosbah, as it contributes a major part of its earnings to the overall development of the country, creating a number of jobs and promoting exports.

A five-year program for the period 2010-14, intends to augment the number of handicraft villages to 50 by the year 2014. These handicraft villages will bring in more skills in the handicraft sector and craft firms, and will also help enhance the competitiveness of Tunisian handicraft products, globally.
