New technique brings 35% fall in tannery pollution

Businessmen say that, the Cleaner Production Techniques (CPT) project, going on at the tanning and leather industry has incurred huge success for the industry, by cutting down the pollution by 30-40 percent as a whole.
These figures signify a decline of 10 percent in the use of chemicals, 25 percent lesser water consumption, 20 percent diminution in effluent discharge and around 20-30 percent decline in the cost of treatment for tanning industries.
So as to regain chrome from worn-out chrome liquors, Sialkot's Cleaner Production Centre (CPC) has even set up a chrome recovery plant. Apart from this, an environmental laboratory to aid the tanners to check the seepage, as also a physical testing laboratory to carry out the physical analysis of properties of leather has also been set up.
Industrial Development Officer of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido), Ivan Kral, ensured that, the organization intends to provide complete technical and financial assistance, to strengthen the leather and tanning industry by liberating the city from pollution caused by industries and tanneries.
The officer extended this assurance while addressing a meeting, organised at the Pakistan Gloves Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PGMEA) and the Tannery Association.
Subsequent to triumphing outcomes of the Cleaner Production Techniques project in the leather industry, PGMEA, Smeda and the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) now eye the export-oriented sports goods and surgical industries in Sialkot for implementing the project.
It has also been decided to stretch the project to metal finishing industry of Gujranwala, fan industries in Gujarat and cutlery industry in Waziradabad. This is being done with the intention to boost up combined production in these industries, while safeguarding them from any sort of environmental perils.
