The recent rains and floods in the country, has affected the coir industry in the southern coastal areas, which has subsequently affected the earnings of thousands of people.

The machinery, coir fibre and the export-oriented finished coir products, amounting to millions of rupees, went astray from coir industries in the coastal areas from Bentota to Dondra due to this natural blow.

Many of the coir industrialists had also got affected by tsunami and had somehow managed to deal with it with the help of local and foreign NGOs.

But the flood-hit coir industrialists and workers in various regions, including, Balapitiya, Ahungalla, Kosgoda, Madampagama, Telwatta, Pereliya, Hikkaduwa, Dodanduwa, Ratgama, and Boossa in the Galle district have still not received any help to get out of the current predicament.

It is expected that the Disaster Management officials would assess the damages in the coir industry.
