Citing Russia as the probable market for woollen goods, trade representatives from the New Zealand textile industry will be visiting Moscow during this week.
According to Elizabeth Tennet, Chief Executive, Textiles New Zealand, Russia used to buy a lot of wool from New Zealand but the Russian wool industry was destroyed during the post-soviet era and since then Russia has been buying a lot of goods from China and Turkey.
She further said that, with changing times, the middle-income Russians are opting for quality wool-based goods such as rugs, blankets and clothing and New Zealand goods are preferred by this target market as the goods are made of natural fibres, which come from a consistent background.
Certain companies were also partaking in the trade representatives' visit to Moscow, including two companies that sell blended merino wool-possum fibre goods.
Tennet informs that, the blended merino wool-possum fibre goods will be well accepted by Russians as possum merino is 40 percent lighter and 50 percent warmer than woollen goods.
