Occupational Health and Safety in the informal sector

H. Mahadevan, Deputy General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress remarked that for workers, the key question is survival and the issue of occupational health and safety is intricately linked. Workers are still struggling for survival wages to earn their living but are unable to do so, on the account of bad health and safe working conditions. The workers ability to earn wages is also determined by his/her health conditions. Hence any legislation in this regard must be comprehensive in its coverage, adequate in its provision and should have a tripartite body – employer, worker and government for its effective enforcements.

Two related documents, a base line study on occupational health, safety and environmental impacts in the six craft clusters across India and a user-friendly manual on occupational health and safety were launched on the occasion.
