PSG College of Technology hosts the International Conference on Healthcare and Hygiene Textiles & Clothing. HEAT 2010 will take place in July 2010.

Medical textiles remain one of the most dynamic areas of research in textiles and increasingly intimate combination of Textile Technology and Medical sciences has made “Medical Textiles” an emerging multidisciplinary field with tremendous potential. Medical Textiles are a major growth area within the Technical Textiles industry and the range of applications continues to grow and increase in diversity with every new development. The consumption of Medical Textiles worldwide was 1.5 million tons in 2000, 14.8 billion during 2003-04 and it is growing by 8% p.a. Market potential for hospital textiles by 2012 is estimated to be $600 million.

With issues such as rising population and increased concern over the hygienic environment and infection prevention, the need to understand and improve hygiene and healthcare products has become increasingly important. The complexity of applications has increased with research and development in the area of medical textiles. Textile fibres, yarns, fabrics and composites plays a vital role in the manufacture of various products like wound dressings, scaffolds for tissue management, medical gowns, bed linens, wipes and sanitary products, implants including the replacement of diseased or non functioning parts of the body.

To showcase the key innovations arising out of academic and industrial research in Medical Textiles, The Department of Textile and Fashion Technology of PSG College of Technology and the Institute for Materials, Research and Innovation (IMRI), The University of Bolton, UK jointly organise a two-day International Conference on “Healthcare and Hygiene Textiles & Clothing- HEAT 2010” on 30th & 31st of July 2010 at PSG college of Technology, Coimbatore, India.

This Conference will provide an International platform for exchange of cutting edge ideas in the Medical & Healthcare Textiles. Topical papers focusing on the entire spectrum of hi-tech medical textiles will be presented by international eminent scientists and researchers in this field.

The First day plenary session encompasses expert lecture from the International experts in the medical textile field across the globe like Dr.S.Rajendran & Prof.S.C.Anand, The University of Bolton, UK, Dr.Nandan Khokar, Biteam AB, Sweden, Prof. R.L.Sivam, Federal University of the State of Rio, Grande do Norte -UFRN, Brazil, Dr.Radhakrishnaiah Parachuru, Georgia Tech University, USA, Prof. Kothari & Prof. R.Alagirusamy, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, Prof. M.D.Teli, The University Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Prof.N.Selva Kumar, Department of Textile Technology, Anna University, Chennai, Mr. Rahul Dharmadhikary, Ahlstorm Medical Fabrics International, Finland and Mr. A. Thayumanavan, Reliance Industries, Chennai. The second day technical sessions of the conference consists of oral presentation of 42 technical papers by National and International expert speakers along with Poster Presentation by researchers.
