The cotton shortage between production and demand has been estimated at 5.2 million tons this year. Cotton output stood at 6.4 million tons in 2009-2010, 1.1 million tons less than the previous year, or down 14.7 percent.

Total annual consumption is estimated at between 11.6-11.9 million tons. As of May in the current cotton year, cotton consumption has already exceeded 900,000 tons. Cotton resources have emerged extremely insufficient.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, as of May 2010, national yarn production totaled to 19.2 million tons, which have consumed 9.2 million tons of cotton according to estimates.

Although China has imported 1.919 million tons cotton this year, an increase of 85 percent year on year and an increase of 32.7 percent compared with the previous year, it has still been difficult to fill the gap in demand.
