During a recent meeting of the Standing Council for Market Access Agreements, the Association of Synthetic Fibre Industry (ASFI) has suggested said that all man-made fibres products should be included in the early harvest programme (EHP) of the free-trade agreement (FTA) under consideration, between India and the European Union.

The FTA is expected to provide duty-free access to a number of products from both India and the European Union.

Speaking exclusively with fibre2fashion, a senior official of ASFI said, “This was discussed in a meeting held in Ministry of Textile in June 2009, where all the textile related associations were invited.

“In the meeting, ASFI and EU agreed to include man-made fibre products in the non-tariff barriers. Representatives of the EU had also suggested keeping these products in the early harvest programme.

“It is a two-way trade and hence it will be useful to our country and will also suit the Indian export market as there is no threat from EU because their production capacity is less, not like China, which has excess capacity."
