Aiming to offer global standards to Nepali handicrafts, the Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal (FHAN) is going to set up a handicraft lab to study the quality of handicraft items. The association has been waiting for the funds from the forthcoming budget, as the government has agreed to provide 49 percent of the overall cost.

As per estimates, setting up of the lab will require around Rs 12 million, of which 51 percent will be contributed by the federation and rest 49 percent will be shared by the government, under Public Private Partnership (PPP).

According to the President of FHAN, Bikash Ratna Dhkhawa, establishing a lab for research and experimentation to attain international standards is imperative for global promotion and expansion of Nepali handicrafts' market.

As Nepali handicraft items have still not made their mark on the international market, it is necessary to export quality products to foreign countries, said Dhkhawa. The country garners Rs 7 billion per year through handicraft shipments and exports 42 handicraft items to 80 countries around the globe.
