The festive season across India begins from next month. During the period, textile and clothing buying, account for a majority of purchases. However, textile traders in the textile hub of Surat are apprehensive about the demand from retailers across the country.
Normally, retailers from across India, start placing orders for fabrics beginning from July to ensure that their orders reach them in time. But though it is the last week of July, the orders still have not started pouring in a way, which happens in any normal year.
Mr Devkishan Manghani, President of Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA) who spoke to fibre2fashion said, “The upcoming festive season as per Indian culture is firstly we have Shravan, Onam in Kerala, Eid, Kaali Pooja (Dashera) and Diwali.
“Despite being a continuous season of demand, which actually should have begun from July 1, the demand has not yet picked up speed. If the demand for the dress materials won't increase, then it will be a disturbing environment for the traders.
“According to me, the main reason behind the same is the inflation. The middle and lower class who have diverted their purchasing power towards food and then their kids education, etc, may not spend as much on textiles and clothing as in previous years”, he concluded by saying.
