Cotton acreage to rise in 2011-12 – Agri Minister

At a recent meeting, Vice-Minister of Agriculture, Wei Chao An said that, various farming sectors continued to maintain stability and development in 2010, while grain achieved a new high.
Production of oilseeds was basically flat, that of cotton fell and that of sugar has steadily increased. Cotton area declined to about 72.40 million Mu (15 mu = 1 hectare), down 2.4 percent and output was 6.2 million tons, down 180,000 tons.
However, he reiterated that cotton sowing area would be increased in the next planting season in order to meet the growing needs of the Chinese textile sector and at the same time reduce dependence on imports.
