The Odisha government plans to seek Geographical Indication (GI) registration for handicraft and handloom products like Odisha Ikat and Sambalpuri Bandha sari, since they qualify for GI registration. Experts are of the opinion that since these products are associated to a particular geographical area, they are eligible for GI registration.
Regional media reports quoted the Odisha chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi as directing the handlooms, textiles and handicrafts secretary Chithra Arumugam, to do the needful and thereby protect the interest of weavers and artisans in the state.
