Pakistan's textile exports up 9.82% in July-May FY18

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 9.82 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms in the first eleven months of fiscal 2017-18, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. During July-May 2017-18, Pakistan earned $12.336 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to $11.232 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal.

Category-wise, knitwear exports rose 16.81 per cent year-on-year to $2.460 billion during the eleven-month period, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up by 13.00 per cent to $2.345 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $57.541 million during the period under review, showing an increase of 32.66 per cent compared to exports of $43.374 million during the same months of the previous fiscal.

Cotton yarn exports showed increase of 9.97 per cent and fetched $1.247 billion, as against exports of $1.134 billion made during July-May 2016-17. Exports of cotton fabric too rose marginally by 2.80 per cent and were valued at $2.015 billion during the initial eleven months of the current fiscal, while bedwear exports increased by 6.65 per cent to $2.055 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were up 11.99 per cent year-on-year to $488.488 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk increased slightly by 3.71 per cent to $606.025 million.

Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan dropped 0.75 per cent year-on-year to $511.737 million during the period under review.

In fiscal 2016-17 that ended on June 30, the value of textile and garment exports made by Pakistan increased by 0.04 per cent to $12.452 billion compared to exports valued at $12.447 billion in 2015-16. (RKS)
