  • Polyester-cotton and polyester-viscose yarn prices have decreased by ₹1-2 per kg in most Indian markets due to slow demand from the downstream industry today.
  • Power looms are reducing production, and market sentiment is affected by declining cotton prices.
  • In Surat and Ludhiana, yarn prices have dropped, while Mumbai's market remains steady.
Polyester-cotton and polyester-viscose yarn prices have been on a downtrend in most Indian markets. Prices have decreased by ₹1-2 per kg across various counts and varieties. Man-made fibre and blended fibre yarns are experiencing slow demand from the downstream industry. Trade sources report that numerous power looms are shutting down due to a lack of buyers. Many power looms have reduced production hours to keep their workers employed. The decline in cotton prices has also affected sentiment in the polyester and viscose value chains. Traders do not expect an improvement in buying activity before July 2024.

In the Surat market, polyester and viscose yarn prices have fallen by ₹1-2 per kg across different counts and varieties. A trader from Surat told Fibre2Fashion, “Demand from the downstream industry is very low. While raw material prices have increased recently, yarn prices have eased due to a lack of buyers. The market is not expected to see improvement before July.”

According to trade sources, in Surat, 30 count polyester spun yarn was traded at ₹142-143 (approximately $1.70-1.71) per kg (GST extra); 40 count poly spun yarn at ₹162-163 (approximately $1.94-1.95) per kg; 50/48 fully drawn yarn (FDY) at ₹116-117 (approximately $1.39-1.40) per kg; 75/72 FDY at ₹106-107 (approximately $1.27-1.27) per kg; 75 bright yarn at ₹106-107 (approximately $1.27-1.28) per kg; and 30 viscose compact yarn (local) at ₹199-200 (approximately $2.38-2.40) per kg (GST extra).

Yarn prices have also declined in the Ludhiana market. According to trade sources, polyester-cotton yarn and polyester spun yarn prices have decreased by up to ₹2 per kg. However, raw material prices have not decreased due to a higher dependence on domestic producers following the implementation of quality control orders (QCOs).

In Ludhiana, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) traded at ₹208-218 (approximately $2.49-2.61) per kg (GST inclusive); 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) at ₹196-206 (approximately $2.35-2.47) per kg; 20 recycled polyester fibre yarn at ₹106-114 (approximately $1.27-1.36) per kg; 30 count polyester spun at ₹155-163 (approximately $1.86-1.95) per kg (GST inclusive); and recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) at ₹74-77 (approximately $0.89-0.92) per kg, as per market sources.

In the Mumbai market, a steady trend was noted for imported viscose vertex yarn and locally manufactured ring-spun yarn. A trader mentioned that there was slow demand from fabric manufacturers, but traders did not hold large stocks of viscose yarn. They had imported viscose yarn in limited quantities due to uncertain demand. Imported 30 count viscose vertex yarn was priced at ₹183-188 (approximately $2.19-2.25) per kg, and local 30 count ring-spun viscose yarn at ₹188-194 (approximately $2.25-2.32) per kg in this market.

In north India, cotton prices further eased amid slow demand from spinning mills. Prices have dropped by ₹20-30 per maund of 37.2 kg in recent days. The decline in ICE cotton discouraged foreign buyers from purchasing more cotton and yarn from the Indian market. However, ICE cotton prices have seen some recovery today. Traders reported that not only spinning mills but exporters also are refraining from fresh buying. Cotton arrivals are decreasing due to the end of the current season.

Today's arrivals decreased to 1,350 bales of 170 kg in north India. State-wise arrivals were as follows: 50 bales in Punjab, 700 bales in Haryana, 300 bales in upper Rajasthan, and 300 bales in lower Rajasthan. Cotton prices in Punjab ranged from ₹5,650 to ₹5,700 (approximately $67.67-68.27) per maund of 37.2 kg, while in Haryana, prices ranged from ₹5,600 to ₹5,700 (approximately $67.07-68.27). In upper Rajasthan, cotton was priced between ₹5,500 and ₹5,700 (approximately $65.88-68.27) per maund. Bikaner line cotton sold for ₹5,700 to ₹5,800 (approximately $68.27-69.47) per maund. In lower Rajasthan, cotton was priced at ₹54,000 to ₹56,800 (approximately $646.78-680.32) per candy of 356 kg.
