Scientists developing artificial muscles from fibres

Scientists at the University of Texas at Dallas are in the process of developing artificial muscles from highly twisted fibres of various materials like carbon nanotubes, nylon thread and polymer fishing line. Potential applications range from robotics, prosthetics and smart textiles that change porosity and shape in response to temperature.

These researchers have produced actuating muscle yarns that, like their wooly counterparts, can be woven, sewn and knitted into textiles.

According to Dr. Carter Haines, they have called these actuating fibres artificial muscles, because they mimic the fibre like form factor of natural muscles.

“We are very excited about their potential use for other practical applications, such as in next-generation intelligent textiles,” he said. (AR)
