With a view to build a lucrative and sustainable industry which would add to the welfare of cotton growers and contribute to region's overall economic growth, the Southern African nations have joined hands to constitute a regional cotton cultivators association.
The Southern African Cotton Producers Association (SACPA) was formed last month after a round of consultative meetings between the members.
The Association has representatives from Malawi, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar and South Africa as its members.
Zimbabwe has second Vice President of the Zimbabwe Farmers Union Mr. Berean Mukwende, and an official of the Zimbabwe Cotton Producers Association, Mr. Meridieth Muchena as its representatives in the Association.
According to Mr. Mukwende, SACPA looks forward to safeguard, preserve and boost common interests of primary cotton producers in the region.
He said that the association mainly aims at increasing productivity and campaigning for production of quality cotton in a feasible and sustainable pattern, encourage harmony amongst member associations and support growth of strategic alliances between cotton associations and private and public sector stakeholders.
He revealed that an interim committee having cotton associations of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia as its members has been set up to draft governance instruments and policy papers, execution of some important activities and for resource mobilization.
