Strike continues in TN powerloom job working units

The indefinite strike for higher wages by powerloom job working units in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore and Tirupur districts has entered its third week with an estimated production loss of Rs 700 crore.

Two rounds of talks on February 4 and February 9 to resolve the issue of wages has failed so far. A third round of talks has been scheduled for February 14.

Powerloom job working units launched an indefinite strike on January 28, claiming that manufacturers were not paying wages as per the agreement in 2014 to give 27 and 30 per cent hike, based on the fabric variety.

Tirupur and Coimbatore have more than two lakh powerloom units, and the strike has affected nearly five lakh people both directly and indirectly. The strike has also hit related industries, like yarn suppliers. (SH)
