President Donald Trump's ‘reciprocal’ tariffs on dozens of countries took effect today at 12:01 am EST (04:01 GMT), further intensifying the global trade war he initiated.

Trump has termed the tariffs ‘permanent’, saying his administration is putting pressure on other world leaders to seek negotiations.

The administration has said many countries have reached out to them for early negotiations.

"We have a lot of countries coming in that want to make deals," he said at a White House event. He also expects China to pursue an agreement.

His administration has scheduled talks with South Korea and Japan, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is expected to visit the United States next week.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister will meet US treasury secretary Scott Bessent today.

Germany could face another recession due to rising trade tensions caused by Trump’s new tariffs, the country’s Finance Minister Joerg Kukies told a radio interview.

Meanwhile, the European Union has told the United States it is ready to talk about buying more natural gas.

Declining to comment on the impact of the new US tariffs, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said New Delhi is trying to negotiate a bilateral agreement with Washington this year.

Assuring his party followers that he knows what he is doing, Trump yesterday said that he will soon announce massive tariffs on pharmaceuticals, and the move will put pressure on pharma companies to ‘leave China’ and build their plants in the United States instead.
