UK output slips in April, textiles boost quarterly gains

UK industrial production fell 0.6 per cent in April 2025, following a 0.7 per cent drop in March, driven by declines in manufacturing and energy output.
Despite this, output rose 1.1 per cent in the three months to April, led by a 1.2 per cent rise in manufacturing.
Textiles, apparel and leather (up 5.5 per cent) and machinery (up 3.2 per cent) were key contributors to the quarterly growth.

The UK’s monthly industrial production output declined by 0.6 per cent in April 2025, marking the second consecutive monthly fall following a 0.7 per cent drop in March, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

The decrease was largely driven by contractions in manufacturing which fell by 0.9 per cent and electricity and gas supply, down 4.3 per cent. Eight of the 13 manufacturing subsectors recorded declines in April.

However, broader output trends remained positive. Production for the three months to April 2025 rose 1.1 per cent compared to the previous three-month period. Manufacturing was the main driver, up 1.2 per cent.

Notably, 11 of the 13 manufacturing subsectors posted growth over the three-month period, with machinery and equipment (up 3.2 per cent), and textiles, apparel and leather products (up 5.5 per cent) making the strongest contributions.
