WPI inflation for apparel rises 2.1% in July 2017

India’s annual rate of inflation, based on monthly wholesale price index (WPI), increased to 1.88 per cent for July 2017 over same month of the previous year. The index for ‘Manufacturing of Wearing Apparel’ group rose by 2.1 per cent to 136.0, while the index for ‘Manufacturing of Textiles’ group declined by 0.3 per cent to 113.4 in July.

The official WPI for all commodities (Base: 2011-12 = 100) for the month of July, 2017 rose by 1.1 per cent to 113.9 from 112.7 for the previous month, according to the provisional data released by the Office of the Economic Adviser, ministry of commerce and industry.

The index for manufactured products (weight 64.23 per cent) for July, 2017 rose by 0.2 per cent to 112.7 from 112.5 for the previous month. The index for textiles sub-group declined by 0.3 per cent to 113.4 from 113.7 for the previous month due to lower price of viscose yarn (3 per cent), manufacture of cordage, rope, twine & netting (2 per cent) and woollen yarn, cotton yarn and manufacture of other textiles (1 per cent each).  However, the price of manufacture of knitted and crocheted fabrics moved up 2 per cent.

The index for ‘Manufacture of Wearing Apparel’ sub-group rose by 2.1 per cent to 136.0 in July, 2017 from 133.2 for the previous month due to higher price of manufacture of wearing apparel (woven), except fur apparel (3 per cent) and manufacture of knitted and crocheted apparel (1 per cent).

The index for primary articles (weight 22.62 per cent) rose by 4.3 per cent to 132.4 from 126.9 for the previous month. On the other hand, the index for fuel and power (weight 13.15 per cent) declined by 1.4 per cent to 88.4 from 89.7 for the previous month due to lower prices of naphtha, ATF, furnace oil, petrol, bitumen, LPG and HSD.  However, the price of petroleum coke moved up.
