WTO's CTG to deliberate on EU textile package to Pakistan

The WTO's Council for Trade in Goods (CTG) is expected to meet on May 26 to decide on the approval of European Union's proposal for zero duty on the import of 64 textile items from Pakistan.

The EU proposal for zero duty and other concessions with a view to help last year's flood victims is facing rough weather from some of the EU member states.

Italy, Spain and Portugal as well as textile lobby Euratex and the European textile and apparel industry, have opposed the EU's trade-related concessions for Pakistan.

Several countries at the WTO including India, Brazil, Peru, and Vietnam have opposed the EU proposal as it would set an unhealthy precedent whereby industrialized countries can distort global trade rules.

These countries argue that the well-established trade rules, particularly treating all countries on par should not be changed. However, they are not against any generous assistance to Pakistan.
