ZDHC Foundation has released ZDHC CMS framework. A chemical management system (CMS) is paramount to worker safety and reduces environmental impact. The framework provides textile, apparel and footwear industries with united base to work from that can be incorporated in a wider management system such as an Environmental Management System (EMS).

‍“I’m very excited that we are releasing a ZDHC CMS framework. It provides a critical link between controlling input chemistries and monitoring outputs. This assists the supply chain in bringing a chemical management programme to life and promotes responsible chemical use by a facility or brand. We are grateful to all those active in the collaboration, who worked to develop this important framework,” said Scott Echols, ZDHC programme director.

‍“We are very excited and happy to release the ZDHC CMS framework together with other brands. The alignment of tools such as chemical management systems ensures we all implement and follow the same clear guidelines making sure we have same core elements of chemical management system,” said Veera Sinnemaki, H&M, sustainability program manager, chemical.

“The ZDHC CMS framework provides clear guidance, based on including various ZDHC guidelines, platforms and solutions, for relevant stakeholders in the supply chain. It is of broad benefit to organisations in the area of chemical management and will be a key element for achieving zero discharge,” said Sheila Shek, Adidas, director, social and environmental affairs.

‍The CMS Framework is part one of the two-part structure of the ZDHC Chemical Management System. One part is the ZDHC CMS Framework that lays out the minimum components of a CMS. The other is the ZDHC CMS Technical Industry Guide, which will cover the implementation of a CMS in the supply chain.

“The CMS Framework will link to the CMS Technical Industry Guide, which is coming soon. Both documents support the holistic implementation of a chemical management system in a textile or leather manufacturing facility and also help those to engage more effectively with the ZDHC Supplier to Zero Programme,” said Prasad Pant, ZDHC South Asia director.

“ZDHC redesigned the entire CMS to be simple, clear, and evolutionary.  As a member of the ZDHC collaborative community, we partnered across brands, facilities and other technical experts to set minimum requirements that align across the industry and around the world. We look forward to using this CMS to strengthen our chemistry foundation and chemical management across the supply chain,” said Joy Marsalla, Nike Inc, sustainable chemicals & air emissions manager.

The ZDHC CMS framework will be a key support for the entire industry as organisations all along the value chain adapt to the pressing need for good chemical management and strive to protect their business into the future.
