Unemployment rate falls down further

According to the most recent figures released by Statistics Netherlands, the average number of unemployed stood at 326 thousand in the period February-April 2008, i.e. 4.2 percent of the Dutch labour force, as against 5.0 percent one year ago. Seasonally adjusted unemployment was reduced over the past six months by an average of approximately 3 thousand a month.

Downward trend of the past six months levels off In the period February-April 2008, the seasonally adjusted unemployment figure stood at 308 thousand, 6 thousand down on the period January-March. As unemployment figures are based on a sample survey, more reliable figures can be achieved by monitoring over a longer period.

Over the past six months, unemployment declined by an average 3 thousand a month. In the first half of 2007, unemployment dropped by an average 7 thousand a month, so the rate of the decline is slowing down.

Unemployment among 25 to 44-year-olds reduced by half over the past three years:
Altogether, there are 49 thousand fewer people unemployed than one year previously. With 37 thousand, the most substantial decline was recorded among 25 to 44-year-olds.

Unemployment in this age category was reduced by more than half in the past three years. In the period February-April of this year, 124 thousand people in the 25-44 age brackets were unemployed.
