Textile and apparel exports from China decreased by 2.2 per cent year-on-year to $99.6 billion during the first five months of 2019, according to the data released by General Administration of Customs. While textile exports saw marginal rise of 1.5 per cent and rose to $48.3 billion, clothing and accessories exports were down 5.5 per cent to $51.3 billion.

For the month of May 2019, data indicates that textiles and clothing exports touched $23.8 billion, showing an increase of 2.8 per cent compared to the same month of the previous year.

Category-wise, textile exports fetched $11.6 billion for China during the month, registering an increase of 3.9 per cent year-on-year. Apparel exports rose by 1.7 per cent to $12.2 billion, the data showed.

The increase in May exports to the US is attributed to the rush to export by the Chinese companies before new US deadlines to impose a tariff hike on $200 billion of Chinese goods. (RKS)
