The Netherlands and India recently discussed ways to further strategic economic cooperation, foster policy alignment and address trade barriers to facilitate smoother market access for Indian and Dutch businesses.

The discussions were held during Indian Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal’s visit to the Netherlands.

Barthwal’s discussions with Michiel Sweers, director general for foreign economic relations at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in The Hague focused on strengthening bilateral trade and economic ties by setting up of the a Joint Trade and Investment Committee (JTIC) mechanism, a release from the Indian ministry of commerce and industry said.

A roundtable of chief executive officers (CEOs) was organised by the embassy of India during the visit. Attended by approximately 40 representatives from Dutch and Indian companies, as well as business chambers and trade organisations, the roundtable facilitated discussions on trade opportunities, challenges and actionable solutions.

Barthwal also visited the Port of Rotterdam and held discussions on enhancing its cooperation with Indian ports. The talks explored opportunities for knowledge sharing, technology transfer and sustainable port management practices.

The visit laid the groundwork for setting up of a green and digital Corridor between the Port of Rotterdam and Indian ports like the Deendayal Port Authority Kandla, and export of green hydrogen, ammonia and methanol from India to Europe, with the Port of Rotterdam acting as a gateway to Europe.
