The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) has temporarily postponed its decision to close textile mills from February 1 citing positive developments in the ongoing discussions on yarn imports, as well as the upcoming national parliamentary elections and referendum.

A BTMA release said that at a January 27 meeting chaired by Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin to resolve the problems of the readymade garments and textile sectors, the adviser promised to take effective, realistic and fair steps to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

A coordination meeting will be held on February 3 at the Ministry of Finance, domestic media outlets reported.

BTMA believes that the problem can be resolved through fruitful dialogue.

BTMA president Showkat Aziz Russell had threatened to close all member factories from February 1 if the government does not provide 10-per cent incentives.
