Dhaka recently requested Washington to grant a temporary waiver allowing Bangladesh to buy Russian oil, saying the measure is necessary to safeguard its energy supplies and support the domestic economy, according to the former’s Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

The request seeks an arrangement similar to the one allowed for India.

“India has already been given a temporary waiver to buy Russian oil. We have said that if such an opportunity is available for India, Bangladesh should also receive it,” he told reporters after a meeting with US ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen.

Discussions with US officials also covered energy cooperation, investment and trade, domestic media outlets cited the minister as saying.
