Japan's minister unsuccessful in winning US tariff exemption assurance

During his recent meeting with US officials to seek exemptions from fresh tariffs on steel, automobiles and other imports, Japanese economy, trade and industry minister Yoji Muto failed to secure any such assurance.

He met US trade representative Jamieson Greer, commerce secretary Howard Lutnick and head of the White House National Economic Council Kevin Hassett in Washington, DC.

The minister said both sides agreed to work closely toward strengthening bilateral economic ties, despite no deal being struck on tariff exemptions for Japan.

Tokyo will continue to try to protect Japanese companies from being hit by the Donald Trump administration's proposed tariffs, he said.

"Based on the latest discussions, we will be in close consultation on how we can make the national interests of Japan and the United States a win-win situation," the minister told a press conference.

They also discussed bilateral energy cooperation, such as the development of liquefied natural gas in Alaska, global media reported.
