Vietnam not significantly hit by new US trade policies: Govt

Vietnamese deputy minister of trade and industry Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan recently said that his country has not been and neither is expected to be significantly hit by new US trade policies as its exports are not in direct competition with US firms in their domestic market.

Rather Vietnam’s exports allow US consumers to access more affordable goods, he told a recent press conference.

His ministry has worked with other ministries and sectors to compile a report, and a meeting will be organised in this month to discuss specific responses, he was cited as saying by domestic media reports.

Through diplomatic channels, Vietnam has conveyed a message to the United States on its willingness to maintain and develop harmonious, sustainable and mutually-beneficial trade and economic relations with the latter, stressing that it does not have any policy that can adversely affect US workers or national security.

The minister is scheduled to hold a meeting with the US trade representative on March 13.

The two countries have a policy dialogue mechanism under the US-Vietnam Trade and Investment Framework Agreement.
