"The objective of Visual Merchandising is for students to understand the concept of how a store image ties into the merchandise of a store. You decorate your house to showcase your personality. Likewise, the personality of a store sends messages about the merchandise," Pookulangara said. "A 3-D computer program is much more effective in creating a fictitious store's personality than a drawing or uploaded photos."

More than 100 retail clothing store chains and more than 70 sportswear and clothing brands and wholesalers use Mockshop, including Calvin Klein, Columbia Sportswear, Dillard's, J.C. Penney, Macy's and Tommy Hilfiger, according to the vrSoftware website.

Pookulangara said students in Visual Merchandising will have access to Mockshop for six months after taking the class, "which will allow them to showcase their projects in virtual portfolios for possible employers."
