Variety of IT tools to bring designs fast & cost effectively to markets

It includes the planning of what the collection or range ought to contain in terms of product types, price levels, colours, sizes, etc, and when each of the products and sub ranges are due in store, and the working out and monitoring of all stages in between. A successful PLM solution creates a value chain where information and transactions are exchanged seamlessly, as if all members of the extended value chain were one entity.

It integrates design, planning, development, manufacturing, marketing and retail activities into a unified process flow and supports parallel integration across product development and sourcing. Virtualisation is quickly becoming a fact of life in the apparel industry today allowing multiple simulations of true-to-life fashion items and fashion line plans and is an integral part of PLM.

All members of the supply chain wherever they are located must be able to see, create, and share true-to-life, virtual representations of all fashion items at any phase of the product lifecycle, preferably over the internet and without any language barrier.

Virtualisation reduces the need for physical samples whilst inspiring creativity and facilitating quicker business decisions throughout a global environment. Brand and product managers, pattern designers, and suppliers can collaborate on product conception, selection, and validation with virtual fashion products and virtual fabrics shared throughout development.

Sketches, storyboards, 3D samples, collection catalogues, even store layouts can now be virtualised for easy global access and collaboration - 24 hours a day and seven days a week, before any physical sample is manufactured. Using a central database, each participant works on the same current version of the product, and can develop the product by adding his own contribution of information, such as textile and style designs, technical specifications, 2D patterns, or 3D virtual samples.

3D simulation of today also enables electronic fit simulation, where the fit of each grade can be tested without a sample being cut. Electronic fit simulation takes digital patterns and turns them into virtual cloth “sewn” by the computer and tested on 3D virtual fit models, showing exactly how the garment is going to look before a single real sample is being produced.

It is the same set of patterns being used to cut the actual garments that are used during electronic fit simulation. The data in use can be either physically measured body details or body scan data of real fit models. The actual progress in cloth simulation technology provides the physical fabric characteristics and drape of the materials to be used in the virtual development cycle.

This enables the look and fit of a garment to be verified. Thus the style and sizing of entire collections can be validated and approved prior to a real sample being made and sampling costs arising. In the new generation of 3D simulations different postures and movement of the virtual mannequins offer designers the chance to even build up their own tailor made virtual cat walk shows.

The sizing surveys which had been carried out in the last years in many countries all over the world provide up to date and exact body data of complete populations or ethnical groups. The body scanners of today enable the set up of new realistic measurements for brand new generations of grading processes to ensure better fit for a whole nation or a just single customer for his individual made-to-measure piece of garment.
