Japan's fashion icon Issey Miyake passes away

Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, known for origami-inspired pleated pieces, experimental designs, and signature perfumes, has passed away at the age of 84. He was the man behind former Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ statement black turtlenecks. Miyake brought the attention of the West to Japanese aesthetics after rising to fame in the 1970s.
While sustainability might be the in-thing today, Miyake envisioned using computer technology to weave apparel with less wastage years ago. His fashion line A-POC, which stands for ‘A Piece of Cloth’, featured pieces that were created by a pre-programmed machine that wove a large tube of fabric with garment outlines that could be cut out without leaving much leftover cloth.
The couture pioneer died of liver cancer, the Miyake Design Office said.
