TWD Fibres have launched their first successful Diolen Thermo reference project. The project is about the usage of polyester hollow fibre filament yarn in mattress covers. Diolen Thermo is a polyester hollow fibre by TWD Fibres. The company is a leading developer of fully integrated filament yarns, customised and tailored to specific customer applications.

Hollow fibres made of polyester have a long history as an animal-friendly alternative to classic down and feather core fillings for bedding such as blankets and pillows. Hollow fibres as filament yarns, on the other hand, have barely made a splash in the bedding sector up to now. The special yarn cross-section of these hollow fibres has cavities in the individual filaments over the entire yarn length. The air trapped in the yarn as a result of these cavities has a naturally insulating effect, much like the natural fur of polar bears. This insulating effect provides numerous benefits for a wide range of applications. In mattresses and bedding like those used for this reference project, it will improve the user’s sleeping comfort while stabilising his/her body temperature even during ambient temperature peaks, according to a company press release.

These effects have been proved by scientific methods. The test object used include two mattress covers, both made of 100 per cent polyester. In one of the two cover fabrics, 40 per cent of the polyester insert was replaced by Diolen Thermo hollow fibre yarn. These covers were developed and manufactured by Mattes & Ammann GmbH & Co KG, a Baden-Wuerttemberg based specialist for textile fabrics.

The company developed the optimum machine setting to support the Diolen Thermo effect in various test setups and adapted the production process accordingly. The new mattress cover fabric with its unique thermo-regulating effects is ready to be introduced to a selected group of Mattes & Ammann’s clientele. Proof of the fabric’s thermoregulatory effect was also provided by an independent testing institute. Two different scenarios were used for identifying the fabric’s heat behaviour by the so-called Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) method. In a winter scenario, cold room temperatures were simulated. A cold environment draws away much of the heat absorbed from the sleeper’s body and stored in the mattress fabric, causing the cover to feel unpleasantly clammy to the touch. In a ‘summer scenario’, hot room temperatures typical during the summer season were simulated. Both ambient heat and body heat are transferred to the mattress fabric, causing us to sweat when sleeping in traditional cover fabrics.

For both of these scenarios, the temperature behaviour of the two mattress covers was closely observed and evaluated. The cover fabric made with a 40 per cent content of Diolen Thermo hollow fibre yarn was shown to perform significantly better in both tests than the cover fabric made of 100 per cent standard polyester. When exposed to cold, its cooling rate was 19 per cent less than that of standard covers, and when exposed to heat it showed a virtually identical effect of up to 18 per cent, which means: the mattress fabric feels pleasantly cool to the touch for a longer time, even at high temperatures, while absorbing the additional warmth generated by the sleeper’s body at a much slower rate.

Thermo yarns by TWD Fibres are also noticeably more lightweight thanks to the air pockets, even though the fabric density is the same. For structures using the same fabric width and design, even 40 per cent Diolen Thermo will save nearly 10 per cent in weight - a particularly interesting option for mattress covers in the logistics sector, such as truck sleeper cabs. Synthetic hollow fibres such as Diolen Thermo discourage mite infestation, are machine washable, and are therefore particularly hygienic. (GK)
