Huntsman Textile Effects is the leading global provider of high quality dyes and chemicals to the textile and related industries. Research, innovation and sustainability are at the heart of what we do and we use cutting edge technology to develop innovative solutions to create innovative products and technologies with intelligent effects, such as built in freshness, sun protection or state-of-the-art dyes to reduce water and energy consumption, meeting the needs of our customers and supporting a more sustainable environment. With operations in 110 countries and 14 primary manufacturing facilities worldwide in twelve countries (China, Columbia, Germany, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey, Switzerland, USA), Huntsman TE is uniquely positioned to provide fast and expert technical service wherever our customers are based.
Huntsman enriches lives through innovation by developing and manufacturing products that not only create value for our stakeholders today, and also make a vibrant world possible for future generations.
Products and processes we develop help mills achieve profitability targets and boost their bottom line. These same products and processes make it easier for them to reduce water and energy consumption and reduce effluents. We help mills communicate with brands and retailers so they, in turn, can show consumers how to cut water and energy consumption during washing, tumble drying and ironing.
As a leader in global chemical manufacturing industry, we make it our business to stay aware of megatrends that impact our operations, our products and our stakeholders. The world’s water use has been increasing at more than twice the rate of population growth over the last century, according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. An increasing number of regions are chronically short of water, and too much of our fresh water is wasted, polluted and unsustainably managed. By 2030, global demand for fresh water will increase by 40 per cent and by 2050, an estimated 1 billion people will face water shortages for daily living such as drinking, cooking and bathing.
The textile industry is one of the oldest and largest in the world and has helped many nations grow their economies and improve the livelihoods of their people. But globally, the textile dyeing and finishing industry is also one of heaviest consumers of water and energy. The industry must adopt sustainable business practices to truly reduce its environmental impact, especially in developing countries, which are the most affected by access to clean water.
At Huntsman, we have focused our research and technology team’s energies on creating chemical products that feature environmental and economic benefits. It starts with our product stewardship approach from the point of development to the ultimate disposal of our products in a safe, healthy, environmentally sound and sustainable way. This has resulted in products such as AVITERA® which helps reduce water consumption per kilogram of material by 50 per cent from an average of 30 to 40 liters to only 15 to 20 liters.
Creating a sustainable textile supply chain will be a key business driver in 2016 and for many years to come for Huntsman Textile Effects. We have already begun the journey to become a leaner, stronger and – most importantly – a more sustainable industry. Huntsman Textile Effects will continue to pioneer a sustainable textile industry and to engage different stakeholders to effectively address environmental challenges facing the industry. By sharing our capabilities, we believe we can make a difference towards supporting a more sustainable environment for our future generations!
Water scarcity already affects every continent. According to the 2014 Global Risks Perception Study, water crisis is among the Top 10 global risks in terms of likelihood and the Number 1 in terms of impact.
The Statistics* are Sobering
We have a responsibility. Huntsman wants to be part of the solution to the water crisis. We will now highlight some of the things we are doing to conserve and protect water resources.
Huntsman is providing villages and schools in India with access to safe drinking water. Access to potable water in villages is still a problem in India. It has to be fetched from long distances, a task usually done by women in the family who draw water from a well or a pump in the area. When Huntsman Textile Effects acquired the Baroda plant in 2009, it worked to clean up contaminated groundwater and integrate treated water in its processes, and then focused on providing clean drinking water to residents outside its gates. At the site’s water treatment plant, Huntsman treats water to meet international standards for its own use and then also to provide drinking water to local villagers. Huntsman also works with pollution control boards to improve the overall quality of underground water by groundwater treatment system and monitoring onsite and offsite wells.
Today, drinking water is available to villagers of Umraya and Luna at various outlets provided near the factory gate and across the site boundary. Current consumption is approximately 2,900 gallons (11 cubic meters) per day, which is expected to increase in future.
However, social responsibility does not stop at the factory gate. In Umraya village, Huntsman has helped by giving funds to install a reverse osmosis system to provide the entire village of 3,500 people with clean drinking water. Huntsman also maintains the drinking water facility for approximately 450 stu-dents in Luna primary school. Recently, the site replaced all the system’s filters. In addition, Huntsman is also educating people about proper water use and working with local industry to improve overall water discharge quality.
According to the World Bank, India is the largest user of groundwater in the world. If current trends continue, in 20 years approximately 60 per cent of all of India’s aquifers will be in critical condition. “Having a safe, adequate water supply is a chief concern for society today. At Huntsman, we believe we have a responsibility to be part of the solution,” says Site Manager Sanjay Soor.
