Address issues of Lankan footwear, leather sector: SLFLPMA

The Sri Lankan Government should address problems of the country’s footwear and leather sector like cess-related issues, lack of financial facilities for manufacturers and illegal imports, Sri Lanka Footwear and Leather Products Manufacturing Association (SLFLPMA) president PGD Nimalsiri said at the recent Footwear and Leather Products exhibition in Colombo.
Training centres that are not properly functioning should be bettered to develop the industry and disseminate new knowledge and technology to ensure enhanced market opportunities, a report in a Sri Lankan newspaper quoted him as saying.
The sector manufactures 75 million pairs of shoes and slippers annually. The 11th edition of fair had 230 stalls, primarily of Sri Lankan manufacturers. (DS)
