Bangla minister urges garment units for workplace safety

Bangladesh commerce minister Tipu Munshi recently urged garment factory owners to ensure workplace safety along with increasing other facilities to make apparel sector sustainable and raise export volume. He was speaking at the Sustainable Apparel Summit in Dhaka jointly organised by SNV Netherlands and Dutch-Bangla Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Ater the Rana Plaza tragedy, the government has intensified efforts on workplace safety and created a congenial atmosphere for garment workers, Bangla media reports quoted Tipu as saying.

Marie-Annick Bourdin, ambassador of France to Bangladesh; Jeroen Steeghs, deputy head of mission and head of economic affairs and development cooperation in the Netherlands Embassy; Faruque Hassan, president of the Dutch-Bangla Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and Jason Belanger, country director, SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, addressed the function.
