- The BGMEA recently met with the Customs House in Chattogram to discuss the acceleration of RMG customs processes.
- The meeting was spurred by the challenges facing the RMG industry, notably the reduced orders due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
- BGMEA's president emphasised the need for streamlined customs services to maintain global competitiveness.
Hassan emphasised the urgent need to simplify customs protocols and speed up services to maintain competitiveness in a fiercely global market. He particularly stressed the importance of reducing lead times, a crucial element in retaining a competitive edge in the fast-paced fashion industry, according to local media reports.
Acknowledging the RMG sector’s significant contribution to Bangladesh’s socio-economic development, Mohammad Fyzur Rahman, commissioner of custom house, assured that they are committed to resolving these issues. The meeting also included other high-ranking officials such as Md Zakir Hossain, additional commissioner, and Tafsir Uddin Bhuiyan, joint commissioner. They expressed their intent to provide comprehensive support to the RMG sector, affirming the custom house’s commitment to streamlining services.
The meeting highlighted not just the present challenges due to geopolitical situations but also the enduring issues tied to customs procedures. With the BGMEA presenting their case strongly, the Customs House is now under pressure to take swift action to keep Bangladesh’s RMG industry competitive on the world stage.
