The Cambodian labour ministry and relevant stakeholders recently initiated talks on the minimum wage for workers in the textile, garment and footwear industries for next year. The ministry has requested all parties to provide research data for the criteria mentioned in Article 5 of the Minimum Wage Law to use as the basis for negotiations.
The social and economic criteria for the minimum wage include family status, inflation rates, living expenses, productivity, the country’s competitiveness, labour market conditions, profit margins and the poverty level, according to a ministry statement.
Workers unions have already conducted informal discussions on the issue, a Cambodian newspaper report quoted Ath Thun, president of the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union, as saying.
The coalition is also conducting a survey on the cost of living and plans to hold discussions with international unions later this month, he said.
The government had fixed the monthly minimum wage for this year at $170. (DS)
