Garment and textile firms in Vietnam should pay more attention to workers’ needs and better manage human resource to sustain a productive and quality workforce, it was discussed at a seminar on workforce development in the sector in Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City recently. This is crucial as Vietnam is acceding to international trade agreements, experts felt.

Chairman of the HCM City Association of Garment, Textile, Embroidery and Knitting Ph?m Xuan Hong told the seminar that building a high-quality, skilled workforce has always been a priority, according to a Vietnamese news portal.

Though exports are huge, the value addition is growing at a very slow pace, according to industry researcher Ph?m Xuan Thu. The rate of workers with technical skills in the industry is 21.1 per cent, which is higher than the average rate of other manufacturing and processing industries, he said.

But the sector’s productivity is lower than the average rate for the country’s industrial sector. High employee turnover rate is another challenge, Thu said. In major companies like Nha Be, Viet Tien, and Phong Phu, the turnover rate is 15-20 per cent, while it is 20-30 per cent and 30-40 per cent in small and foreign direct investment firms respectively.
