Amazon recently announced an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered feature, called StyleSnap, which allows a shopper to accurately convey a garment style without worrying about descriptive words. The customer needs to click the camera icon in the Amazon App, select the ‘StyleSnap’ option, and then upload a photograph or screenshot of a fashion look.

StyleSnap will then present you recommendations for similar items on Amazon that match the look in the photo. When providing recommendations, StyleSnap considers a variety of factors such as brand, price range and customer reviews, according to a blog post on Amazon website.

Announcing the feature at the Amazon re:MARS conference in Las vegas recently, the company’s consumer worldwide chief executive officer Jeff Wilke said the simplicity of the customer experience belies the complexity of the technology behind it.

The conference is a new AI event for machine learning, automation, robotics and space.

StyleSnap uses computer vision and deep learning to identify apparel items in a photo, regardless of setting. Deep learning technology also helps classify the apparel items in the image into categories like ‘fit-and-flair dresses’ or ‘flannel shirts’.

Deep learning refers to a class of machine learning techniques based on artificial neural networks, which are inspired by the working of the human brain. (DS)
