Anita Dongre Foundation has set up a production unit in Jawhar town, near Mumbai, to train women in tailoring, creating local employment for women. This is the second livelihood project by the Anita Dongre Foundation after the success in Charoti, Maharashtra. Jawhar is the last of Maharashtra’s tribal settlements. The region sees many cases of malnutrition.

The area has dwindling agricultural produce and limited urbanisation.

The House of Anita Dongre in collaboration with Nagarparishad and Pavneet Kaur, deputy collector of Jawhar, inaugurated the craft centre where the women are being taught a variety of garment making techniques. The project currently provides employment to 70 women working on 50 machines. This number is set to double within the year to create livelihoods for 120 women on 100 machines.

Anita Dongre Foundation was set up to empower women, especially in rural India by taking jobs back to them and making villages independent economic centres. In Jawhar this effort has involved training women in the art of sewing, ironing, pattern cutting and so on to ensure economic independence through an accessible and dependable source of income. Apart from training these women, the project also provides a travel stipend to these women to maintain a comfortable and stress free work environment.

“With Anita Dongre Foundation we are focussed on taking jobs back to the villages of India where women can lead progress. These trainings, leading to dependable jobs allow women to work close to home but still bring home a sizable earning to have a voice in family decisions. There is enough evidence that shows how this financial empowerment is a game changer in terms of a country’s socio-economic progress. I’m particularly excited to see women take the lead in making villages independent economic units and inspired by their drive. ” says Anita Dongre, founder, House of Anita Dongre.

Founded in 1995 by Anita Dongre, Meena Sehra and Mukesh Sawlani, House of Anita Dongre is one of India’s leading fashion houses. (SV)
